Blue Jays Organizational Rosters: Lansing Lugnuts

Revisiting our opening day roster predictions and comparing with the current roster

Here’s what my opening day roster prediction was for the Lugnuts (with notes on where I went wrong and where the player actually ended up):

C Ryan Hissey

1B Justin Atkinson                      Released

2B Cavan Biggio                           A+

3B Vladimir Guerrero Jr

SS J.C Cardenas                             A+

LF Lane Thomas                           A+

CF Joshua Palacios                       DL

RF Connor Panas                          A+

DH Christian Williams

C Michael de la Cruz

INF Ryan Metzler                         ? (Could be released, on DL, or at extended spring.                                                                Haven’t heard)

OF Josh Almonte                          Assigned to extended spring training

OF Jake Thomas

SP Justin Maese

SP Jordan Romano                      A+

SP T.J Zeuch                                  A+

SP Justin Shafer                           A+

SP Josh deGraaf                           A+

RP Starlyn Suriel                         Released

RP Ryan Cook                               A+

RP Philip Walby

RP Geno Encina

RP Kirby Snead

RP Andrew Case                          A+

RP Dan Lietz

My raw score: 10/25. Doesn’t sound too good. The reason for the low score is mainly injuries. Between the big league team, AAA, AA and A+, there are 12 players on the DL (13 including Gavin Floyd who was released) and all were placed on the DL after I made my predictions.

Thus for each injury, someone moves up from a lower level and so on and so forth. Some injuries were inevitable but predicting who was impossible.

Here’s who actually composed the active roster for Lansing’s first game (with where I thought they’d end up beside):

C: Michael de la Cruz

1B: Bradley Jones — A- until news of Atkinson’s release, then moved Jones here

2B: Yeltsin Gudino — A-

3B: Vladimir Guerrero Jr

SS: Bo Bichette — Rk Bluefield. I thought they’d start him slower after his brief GCL stint last year.

LF: Nick Sinay — Rk. Belonged at a higher level but there wasn’t room at the time.

CF J.B Woodman — A-

RF Edward Olivares — A-

DH Christian Williams

C Ryan Hissey

OF Jake Thomas

INF Nash Knight — A- until news of Attaway’s release, then moved Nash here

SP Justin Maese

SP Mike Ellenbest — A-

SP Osman Gutierrez — Rk

SP  Patrick Murphy — A- but I had him challenging for a spot in Lansing

SP  Andy Ravel — A-

RP Griffin Glaude — A-

RP Zach Jackson — A-

RP Philip Walby

RP Geno Encina

RP Kirby Snead

RP Jackson McClelland — A-

RP Dan Lietz

RP Tayler Saucedo — A-

DL: RP Nick Hartman, RP Travis Bergen, OF Joshua Palacios, C Javier Hernandez, 3B Carl Wise

Lansing opted to go with an eight man bullpen and a short bench. The Lugnuts’ roster won’t stay in its current iteration for long as some will come off the DL soon.
